DMG or dimethylglycine is a derivitive of the simplest amino acid, glycine. It is an adaptogen, a metabolic enhancer, and methyl donor. It is a natural substance found in low levels in the body and in certain foods like meat (liver), beans, seeds, and grains. Dimethylglycine (DMG) is a supplement that is often used as a performance enhancer in racing animals such as dogs and horses for its alleged ability to reduce lactic acid buildup and therefore its ability to reduce muscle fatigue. It is a derivative of the amino acid glycine and is a natural product of choline metabolism in the body. Other reported uses/benefits have been for autism, seizures, lupus, melanoma, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, and improved immune and cardiovascular function in humans, although many of these uses have not been strongly corroborated by robust scientific studies.


There are differences in how countries regulate supplements. In the United States, these substances are not as vigorously regulated by the FDA as other medications, which means they can be sold without the manufacturer proving their effectiveness, safety, and without a guarantee of consistent or accurately reported ingredients. In Canada, products that have been evaluated for quality, safety, and effectiveness by Health Canada and authorized for sale will have a license number on the label.


Vitamins, herbal therapies, and supplements have the potential to interact with each other, as well as with prescription and over the counter medications. It is important to tell your veterinarian about any medications (including all vitamins, supplements, or herbal therapies) that your pet is taking.


Data in humans are also quite limited. A few studies suggest DMG may help enhance both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses (2). However, DMG had no effect on oxygen consumption in children with SLSJ-COX deficiency (7), and its use to treat seizures or autism stays controversial as limited clinical trials have yielded mixed results (1) (8). In addition, a systematic review of supplements found no effects with DMG for autism symptoms (11).


Enhanced physical performance in animals with DMG supplementation may occur via improved oxygen utilization and reduced lactic acid formation. In humans, it is thought to enhance humoral and cell-mediated immune responses (2). No mechanisms have been uncovered to elucidate claims of DMG for autism, ADHD, epilepsy, chronic fatigue syndrome, or athletic performance enhancement. A recent metabolic analysis of healthy subjects correlated high plasma cholesterol levels with low levels for some metabolites related to mitochondrial metabolism including dimethylglycine (9).


DMG has been suggested as a beneficial supplement and has been used to combat fatigue, improve metabolism, and strengthen the immune system [1, 2]. On the back of these, some nutritional companies have included DMG in their products and made claims that it has beneficial effects on endurance performance by combating fatigue and enhancing metabolism.


However, there is at present, little evidence to back up these claims. Most research appears to point to there being little or no benefit to DMG supplementation [2]. For example, tested with college athletes, DMG increased maximum oxygen absorption. Athletes taking DMG had a 23.6% increase over placebo control in the length of exercise time before exhaustion [7]. The results of these studies could not be verified in adults and children [8, 9].


Research studies concerning DMG and MS are not available. A recently published review about other dietary interventions in MS shows inefficient evidence of whether supplementation with antioxidants, omega-3, omega-6, or vitamin D has any impact on MS-related outcomes [5].

The effect of dietary supplementation with N,N-dimethylglycine sodium salt (Na-DMG) was evaluated in a feeding trial with 1500 1-day-old broiler chicks (Cobb 500). DMG was supplemented at 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5 or 1 g Na-DMG/kg feed to a ration with either animal fat (chicken fat) or vegetal fat (soy oil) as main fat source. In the vegetal fat diets, production value was significantly linearly improved by supplementation with DMG up to 11%. Irrespective of dietary fat source, abdominal fat percentage was significantly linearly reduced up to 24% and meat yield tended to increase linearly with DMG level up to 4%. In the vegetal fat groups, DMG significantly lowered abdominal fat pad by up to 38% and tended to increase meat yield up to 6% at the highest dose. Fasted non-esterified fatty acid level significantly decreased with increasing DMG level up to 36% and thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) decreased with a statistical trend up to 46% at the highest dose. In vegetal fat diets, addition of DMG resulted in significant lower TBARS level by 56% at the highest dose. Finally, a significant quadratic effect on ascites heart index was present in the vegetal fat diets, with a minimal value at 0.5 g Na-DMG/kg. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with DMG may improve technical and slaughter performance, and may reduce oxidative stress and pulmonary hypertension, but the degree of effects is modulated by fatty acid profile of the diet. Herewith, effects are more pronounced in a diet rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids compared with a diet rich in saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. 2ff7e9595c
